What is the Patent Cup?
The Patent Cup originated in 1989 and has become an annual international regatta (yacht race) in which patent attorneys and related professionals form teams to represent their countries and to vie for the prestige of winner for the year. Past competitions were held in Europe, North America, South America, Australia, and Africa. This year, the competition is being held in Split, Croatia.
My colleague Reuven Mouallem, who first proposed the addition of an Israeli team to the Patent Cup, and I will represent Israel this year, from May 29 to June 2. As we are still a few members shy of crewing an entire boat, we will combine forces with patent attorneys from Germany, Switzerland, Romania, and Finland to form an international team. (Reuven and I are Americans, also, but America is well-represented already).
Although everyone wants to win, we view the event as a specialized form of professional assembly, sharing experiences and spreading goodwill as pseudo ambassadors from our respective countries. I am proud to have this opportunity to represent Israel.
